3 simple steps to build a pond

Step 1
Marking and digging the hole

Once the hole is roughed out, check the
bottom with a carpenter's level
and make any necessary adjustments. Also remove
any sharp objects such
as rocks or roots, filling any gaps left behind. Next add
a 2" layer of clean,
damp sand. Spread it carefully along the bottom and check
again for level.
Step 2
Checking for level

Once the hole is roughed out, check the bottom with a carpenter's level and
make any necessary adjustments. Also remove any sharp objects such as rocks
or roots, filling any gaps left behind. Next add a 2" layer of clean, damp sand.
Spread it carefully along the bottom and check again for level.
Step 3
Positioning the shell

Carefully lower the shell into the hole and check the top edge for level. If it's
off only slightly, you may be able to wiggle the shell into alignment. If not, remove
the shell and revel the bottom. Now begin filling the shell with water using a
garden hose. Start slowly, backfilling along the sides at the same time with mixed
sand and soil to support the shell at all points (above). Pack down the mixture.
Add 4" of sand and soil, then add 4" of water and check the shell for level. Repeat
this procedure until the water reaches the top. Finish by installing whatever edging
you have planned.
